The Olivetree (=Olive Tree:Olea europea - Family Oleaceae) is a robust up to 15m high slowly growing in old age gnarled and twisted tree with a huge wide root system that gets down to a depth of 6m. The Olive Tree can get very old there are specimen with the age of 1.000 bis 1.500 years. First the bark is smooth greenish to gray in old age cracked brownish with irregular hollows.
Olive Trees in cultivation are often trimmed for easier harvest. So it comes to bizarre shapes.
Since the prehistoric age Olivetrees are cultivated in the whole Mediterranean region, Spain, France, Italy. The Olive is native to Asia Minor and Spain. Its fruit, the olive, is of major agricultural importance in the Mediterranean region as the source of olive oil.
One olive tree in Bar, Montenegro, is claimed to be over 2000 years old. The age of an olive tree in Crete, claimed to be over 2,000 years old, has been determined on the basis of tree ring analysis.[15] Another well-known olive tree on the island of Brijuni (Brioni), Istria in Croatia, has been calculated to be about 1,600 years old.
